St Augustine's RC Primary School

Physical Education

At St Augustine’s, our goal is to spark a lifelong love of sport and physical activity in every child. We want all pupils to leave Key Stage 2 as confident, active individuals who enjoy being physically active. Through a wide range of sports and activities, like invasion games, gymnastics, and dance, children will build strong fundamental skills that help them succeed in any physical pursuit. They'll also learn the value of healthy competition, whether that's striving to beat their own personal best or competing with others. Alongside physical skills, we focus on teaching the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle, essential swimming and water safety skills, and life skills like teamwork, resilience, and independence.

Sporting Options

We also enter a number of Hammersmith & Fulham sports competitions to ensure that pupils have the opportunity to develop a range of skills involved in team games. We offer an inclusive sporting option and ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to represent the school in at least one competition before they leave in Year 6.

These competitions include:

  • Mayor’s Cup Football Tournament (Boys & Girls)
  • Queen’s Club Squash Tournament
  • Dodgeball
  • Panathlon
  • Sports Hall Athletics

 What Makes a Good Sportsperson?

Being great at PE or sports isn't just about running fast or scoring goals—it’s also about how you act and how you treat others. Here are the awesome qualities of a good sportsperson:

1. Tries Their Best

Good athletes always give it their all, whether they win or lose. They don’t give up easily and keep working hard.

 2. Has a Positive Attitude

They stay cheerful, even if things don’t go their way. They cheer for others and bring good energy to the team.

3. Listens and Learns

They listen to their teacher or coach, follow instructions, and try to get better each time they play.

 4. Works Well with Others

Great players are great teammates! They share, pass, take turns, and support their friends.

5. Shows Good Sportsmanship

They play fair, follow the rules, and shake hands—even after a tough game. They know it’s about fun, not just winning.

6. Pays Attention

They watch carefully, stay focused during games, and know what’s happening on the field or court.

7. Takes Care of Their Body

They warm up, cool down, and stay active. They also eat healthy foods and get enough rest to stay strong and healthy.

 8. Practices Regularly

Good athletes don’t become great overnight. They keep practicing, even when it’s hard, and slowly improve.

9. Kind and Respectful

They respect their teammates, opponents, coaches, and referees. They treat everyone kindly—no teasing or being mean.

10. Confident but Humble

They believe in themselves but don’t brag. If they win, they celebrate kindly. If they lose, they learn and keep going.
